Now that the Festival season is over for “A Necessary Journey” the Vietnam children’s documentary produced by Jakes’s Ladder Productions, we are pursuing the further exposure of this important film through the Public Television Channels. All of the major markets have been given the information and are beginning to pick up the movie. It will be aired in Utah on KUEN channel 9 two times.

On November 7, 2009 Good Shepard Lutheran Church hosted a silent auction, fundraiser, and screening of Binh Rybacki’s A Necessary Journey. As the event began, participants were directed to a well appointed room with a variety of delicious foods on which to snack while perusing the items up for bid in the silent auction. The Pastor, Jim Munter, Chairman of the Board of Children of Peace International, soon made the announcement that the screen in the room displaying pictures from humanitarian trips to Vietnam would not be where the film itself would be shown. He announced that we would all soon adjourn to the Sanctuary to view the film.
The Sanctuary was about three quarters full as the film began, a nice turnout, and when the question was raised how many here have been to Vietnam over half of the hands went up. This group was not unfamiliar with the problems and challenges facing those caring and tenacious enough to undertake providing the underprivileged children of Vietnam the aid they desperately need. The film itself details one 17 day road trip to provide such aid to forgotten areas of Vietnam which need it most. For Binh Rybacki, this was only one of her frequent annual trips back to Vietnam to fuel and expand her ongoing efforts to help these children, such as a young girl homeless after being sold into prostitution, or an elderly leper woman who is able to regain some sight with the help of treatment. This film demonstrates, in a very practical and hands on way, a deep, loving, compassion for others, beginning with those who need it most. Rybacki, when asked how much time she spends in Vietnam, responds by saying that she does not get bogged down thinking about that or what she might be missing on either end and simply does as much as she can in the moment wherever she may be. To me this drives home the profound nature of such an individual and the importance of such a film. Binh Rybacki, as a Vietnamese refugee, had made it out free and clear to pursue her own comfort and success yet the definition of true success to her involved going back to the source of the pain and suffering to provide opportunity and assistance for those left behind. This is but only one of the countless places around the world where people live in deplorable conditions and in dire need of help, but thanks to those who, once they know, find it a necessary journey to help, this place is now seeing the light of day and these people are beginning to get a bit of the help and hope they desperately need.
The film wrapped up with the conclusion of the silent auction and a call for donations heeded by many generous contributors, but, even as many great accomplishments and generous donations were acknowledged, the focus remained on the enormous need for more help to address the ongoing needs of these people. Although her focus has been Vietnam, Binh Rybacki left the audience with the challenge that we make helping , loving, and supporting children all over the world a necessary journey for us all.
